🏀 Is Bronny James Ready for the NBA?
Paul George saves Clippers from another bad loss, college coaches dish on Bronny James' NBA future, and the Brooklyn Nets fire Steve Nash and are expected to hire Ime Udoka.
Happy Humpday!
PAUL GEORGE
Paul George Saves Clippers From Another Bad Loss
The Los Angeles Clippers narrowly avoided disaster thanks to a monster Paul George performance. PG13 had 35 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals, and hit two clutch shots in the final 40 seconds to ice the game against the rebuilding Houston Rockets.
The Clippers entered this Houston matchup coming off a four-game losing streak, which included two bad losses against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In their defense, Kawhi Leonard was absent in all those games, but this Clippers team has genuine title aspirations, and losses to tanking teams are unacceptable.
To George’s credit, he didn’t hide from the criticism, saying: "I take full responsibility for us and our record right now. Regardless of who is in the lineup, who's not, I am more than capable of going out and performing and willing our team to wins. So I took a lot of on the chin for myself for the way we have been playing and for the start that we have had so far."
With Leonard expected to miss the Clippers' upcoming road trip and the majority of the team struggling, they’re going to need more big nights like this out of Paul George.
BRONNY JAMES
College Coaches Dish on Bronny James' NBA Future
Bronny James has his eye on the NBA, but according to a recent survey, it’s going to take some time. The Athletic recently surveyed eight coaches from major conference schools and two NBA scouts who have seen him play, and the prevailing sentiment is that while Bronny is talented, he isn’t NBA-ready just yet.
Bronny is a four-star recruit and has no shortage of options should he play college ball, which most people believe he will do. Some of the big-name schools in the mix include the likes of Oregon, UCLA, USC, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio State, and Memphis.
Bronny’s biggest strengths are his impressive understanding of the game and all-around abilities on the court. No one is ruling out an NBA future for the young man, but coaches think he’s more likely to take a few years to develop and mimic Jalen Brunson or Josh Hart's career path than follow in the massive footsteps of his dad.
BROOKLYN NETS
Nets Fire Steve Nash and are Expected to Hire Ime Udoka
The Nets sent Twitter into a frenzy yesterday afternoon by announcing they mutually parted ways with coach Steve Nash and are expected to hire Ime Udoka. The writing has been on the wall for Steve Nash for quite some time, and after falling to a 2-5 start to open the year, changes were in order.
However, the rapid decision to move forward with suspended Celtics head coach Ime Udoka ended up being the most surprising news of the day. Udoka was an assistant coach with the Nets in the 2020-21 season before going on to have tremendous success in his first year as the Celtics' head coach. In particular, Udoka was praised for his leadership and defensive acumen, and from a purely X’s and O’s standpoint, Udoka should be an improvement over Steve Nash. However, the gigantic elephant in the room is that Udoka is only available because of a scandal.
There is still so much unknown about the Udoka situation, but what we do know is that he had an improper workplace relationship with a female subordinate and was handed an unprecedented one-year suspension because of it. It's hard to imagine any team giving Udoka a chance this quickly, let alone a team as consistently drama-plagued as the Nets, but here we are. This coaching change is expected to occur in the next 24 to 48 hours, but in the interim, assistant coach Jacque Vaughn will serve as head coach.
