UNI WATCH
Spurs unveil much-anticipated throwback jerseys to celebrate 50th anniversary
The Spurs will debut an alternate uniform for this upcoming NBA season to commemorate the franchise’s 50-year legacy. These new Nike NBA Classic Edition uniforms are a throwback to the team’s ABA days and were popularized by Spurs legend “The Iceman” George Gervin.
The jersey will feature a black “San Antonio” outlined in white on the chest, while the shorts will have a black and white trim and silver diamonds with the Spurs logo on the outside legs. According to Becky Kimbro, the VP of Brand Engagement for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, this undertaking was two years in the making!
You’ll be able to see these incredible threads at select home and road games during this upcoming season.
FREE AGENCY
Deandre Ayton's future looms large over the entire NBA!
After brief discussions with the Lakers on a multiplayer deal, the Pacers have moved on and turned their attention to restricted free agent Deandre Ayton. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Pacers are very close to giving Ayton an offer sheet or executing a sign-and-trade. The Pacers have been interested in the former 1st overall pick for some time now but needed to complete the Malcolm Brogdon trade in order to clear enough cap space to make a run at him.
Should Ayton sign an offer sheet, the Suns will have an opportunity to match it and keep him in Phoenix, but it remains to be seen if their notoriously frugal owner will do so. Ayton was expected to garner significant interest after averaging an efficient 17.2 PPG and 10.2 rebounds this past season, but the market has unexpectedly dried up.
Ayton leaving Phoenix for nothing would seriously mess with their ability to trade for disgruntled Nets star Kevin Durant. While the Nets are reportedly not interested in the big man, Ayton could, in theory, be traded for other assets that the Nets might want.
KYRIE
Clippers identified as a dark-horse Kyrie Irving destination
While most NBA fans and media presume a Kyrie Irving and LeBron James reunion to be inevitable, others aren’t so sure. NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Bally Sports recently suggested not to rule out the cross-town Clippers as a potential trade destination. Robinson noted that Irving and coach Ty Lue are on better terms than we've been led to believe, and obviously, a trio of Leonard, George, and Irving would be dynamic.
While the Lakers are still the presumptive favorite, this update isn’t completely out of left field. The Clippers were originally one of Kyrie’s preferred sign-and-trade destinations, along with the Lakers, Knicks, Heat, Mavs, and 76ers, before he opted into the final year of his contract with the Nets.
Irving's fit with the Clippers has been somewhat complicated by their recent signing of former All-Star John Wall, as they play the same position, but if the price is right, the Clippers front office will certainly be interested.
