🏀 Luka Doncic Makes History... Again!
Luka Doncic's recent scoring puts him in Wilt Chamberlain's company, former DoorDash driver Matt Ryan saves the Lakers, and Lamar Odom has his pawned championship rings returned.
Have a fantastic weekend!
LUKA DONCIC
Luka Doncic's Recent Scoring Puts him in Wilt Chamberlain's Company
Luka Doncic is scoring at a level we haven’t seen in the NBA in sixty years! His seven consecutive 30-point performances to start a season is the longest streak since Wilt Chamberlain in 1962-63, and only Chamberlain and Jack Twyman have accomplished such a feat.
It’s also a stark contrast to how Luka opened last season, where he admitted to showing up to training camp out of shape. Doncic is currently averaging a league-best 36.1 PPG, which is good for the third highest-scoring average through seven games in the last sixty years, behind only MJ in 1987-87 and James Harden in 2019-20. But best of all, he's still only 23.
The craziest part of his game is that Luka isn’t just scoring at an electric pace, he’s facilitating for his teammates. Luka is on such another level right now that his four 30-point, 10-assist games are the same amount as the rest of the NBA has combined. If Luka can keep this pace up, his first MVP award is in the bag.
LA LAKERS
Former DoorDash Driver Matt Ryan Saves The Lakers
In a game that LeBron James nearly missed due to an illness, former DoorDash driver Matt Ryan was the hero the Lakers needed. As time expired, Matt Ryan hit an improbable corner three off an impressive Austin Reaves inbound to send the game into overtime, where the Lakers were able to secure the victory.
Lakers coach Darvin Ham made a mistake in leaving Ryan on the bench as the Lakers tried to tie the game, but after Dyson Daniels luckily missed his free throws, the Lakers were given one more chance, and Ham wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice.
Ham’s record is nothing to write home about, but he’s shown he’s much more reactive to the Lakers' needs than Frank Vogel, which was one of the biggest knocks against him. Whether that’s moving Westbrook to the bench despite the future Hall of Famer’s reluctance, or in a tight game, admitting he made a mistake, putting the right guy back in, and drawing up a play for him, Ham is showing some real coaching chops.
LAMAR ODOM
Lamar Odom has his Pawned Championship Rings Returned
Lamar Odom had a tremendous NBA career that included two NBA championships and a Sixth Man of the Year Award, but he’s had some very public challenges in his post-playing days. Most notably, in 2015, when he nearly died from a drug overdose in a Nevada brothel.
In the wake of his growing medical bills from this incredibly difficult time, he made a choice that he later regretted — he auctioned off his championship rings. Odom said his mind wasn’t “in the right place” when he made this decision but admitted that the money helped him get back on his feet. According to TMZ, the rings sold for $36,600 and $78,000.
During a recent appearance on the "On the Lo" podcast, Odom shared a heartwarming story about how he was reunited with his rings through a very generous Lakers fan. While at a Lakers game last month, Odom ran into a familiar face, a yet-to-be-named fan who informed Odom that he was the one who bought his rings. This fan then arranged a meeting where he gave them back to Odom free of charge.
