š The Raiders Got Caught Up
Happy Friday BTP family! The long awaited 'Avatar: The Way of Water' finally came out last night after 13 years of waiting since the first. The Canadian filmmaker James Cameron said they have plans to release a third movie in 2024 and two more after that, however, they need this one to gross 'at least $1 billion' for this to be feasible. Back to sports the 49ers were able to clinch the NFC West title last night with their win over the Seahawks. In today's rendition of BTP we dive into Tyler Herro's night scoring a new career high for the Miami Heat, a rulebook exploit that the Raiders have been taking advantage of for the last two weeks, and Tyrell Terry's story about why he retired from basketball at the age of 22.
Have a great weekend!
CAREER HIGH
Inside Tyler Herro's Career Night
Itās a small sample size, but Tyler Herro is making his bubble run look like amateur hour with his play lately. On a night when the Heat were without Bam Adebayo and Kyle Lowry, someone had to get buckets for Miami, and Herro stepped up in a big way. Herro put up a career-high 41 points and tied a Heat record with a whopping ten 3-pointers. He did all of that just one night after scoring 35 points on nine 3-pointers.
Herro isn't just scoring at will either, he's doing it with insane efficiency. Last night, Herro made 13 of his 20 attempts, including shooting over 66% from downtown. Herro said he didnāt approach the game with the intention of tying the record but admitted that 3-point shooting has been a point of emphasis for him lately. Coach Spo agreed with this more aggressive approach while calling Herro āa brilliant shooter.ā Herro may have won last yearās Sixth Man of the Year Award, but itās gonna be a long time before he comes off the bench again.
RULEBOOK EXPLOIT
The No Fun League Strikes Again, Ruining Raiders' Loophole
Leave it to Las Vegas to try and cheat the system. For the past two weeks, the Las Vegas Raiders have used a placeholder during their kickoffs which was strange because, generally speaking, holders only come in for field goals and on kickoffs during inclement weather. But it was actually pretty clever, as in theory, by holding the ball at the top of the tee, the kicker could gain more height from each kick and thus give their special teams unit more time to get downfield and prevent a good return.
Now Vegas didnāt just do this all willy-nilly; they checked in with the NFL and seemingly received approval before trotting it out. Vegas figured since the NFL rulebook says the ball can be placed on the tee in any fashion (something we see all the time with onside kicks), they were in the clear, but unfortunately, they were mistaken.
According to FootballZebras.com, the league has decided it's an illegal tactic. NFL rules state that teams may only use a one-inch tee, and by using a holder in the way they have, they have effectively made it a 1.5-inch tee. Not a lot has worked out for the 5-8 Raiders, and this is just another thing to add to their growing list of woes.
BIGGER THAN SPORTS
Tyrell Terry Retires from NBA at 22
Tyrell Terry, the 31st pick in the 2020 NBA draft, has officially called it a wrap on his basketball career with a heartfelt and moving Instagram post. Terry explained that he made the difficult decision to step away from the game to prioritize his mental health.
Terry eloquently and harrowingly described his anxiety around basketball as something that ābegan to destroy meā and something that caused him to ādespise and question the value of myself.ā It's a difficult statement to read but should serve as an important reminder of the pressures that these athletes endure in order to play at the highest level.
Terry played in 11 NBA games during his rookie year and in two games for the Grizzlies last year. He spent most of his pro career in the G League with the Memphis Hustle, where he averaged 13.2 PPG across two seasons. While itās devastating that Terry had to choose between his mental health and basketball, he undoubtedly made the right choice. We wish him nothing but the best and canāt wait to see what he chooses to do next.
