👟 Zion's max contract reportedly has a weight clause!
Zion Williamson's max contract reportedly has a weight clause, Draymond Green could leave the Warriors if they don't pay up, Steph Curry’s rise to stardom, and the Las Vegas Aces triumph during WNBA Commissioner's Cup!
Have a great weekend!
ZION WILLIAMSON
Zion Williamson's max contract reportedly has a weight clause!
Zion Williamson wasted no time inking his $193M five-year rookie max extension, but it turns out, this contract has some specific protections in place. According to Pelicans beat writer Christian Clark, Zion will be subject to periodic weigh-ins throughout the deal, and if his weight plus body fat percentage exceeds 295, his guaranteed money can be reduced. Zion’s last playing weight was listed at 284 lbs.
There was plenty of speculation that the 22-year-old Zion could be the first player to ever turn a rookie extension down due to his popularity and massive endorsements, but his troubled injury history likely prevented such a drastic step.
Zion has historically struggled with injuries and conditioning, only playing in 85 games over the last three years, but his talent has never been in question. Zion is as dynamic and unique a player as we have in the NBA, and while this clause may seem punitive, if it helps keep him on the court, we’re all winners here.
DRAYMOND GREEN
Draymond Green could leave the Warriors if they don't pay up!
As a former second-round pick, Draymond Green has outperformed and outearned all realistic projections upon leaving Michigan State. After pocketing nearly $130M career earnings, Green will make $25.8M next season and holds a player option for the following season at $28.5M. Assuming he opts out, the Warriors could offer him a five-year $164M max, and according to reports out of The Athletic, that’s what he’s seeking.
Green has been a bedrock of Dub Nation for years, but at 32 years old and the Warriors still needing to pay Wiggins and Poole, the two sides are likely pretty far apart on his next contract. Complicating the issue further is that reportedly Steph Curry wants to see Green get paid and views him, Klay, and Green as a package deal.
While Green demanding a trade seems unlikely, he’s let it be known that getting this contract is his top priority. This contract likely represents his last big bite at the apple, and with four championships under his belt, he’s reportedly prepared to pursue other options to get that money elsewhere.
EXCLUSIVE
How Stephen Curry went from a three star recruit to a first ballot Hall of Famer
Steph Curry was about as disrespected as it gets coming out of high school. Despite being all-conference and all-state and leading the Charlotte Christian School Knights to three conference titles and three state playoff appearances, scouts just couldn't see past his modest 6’2, 165lb frame.
Steph finished high school as a three-star recruit, the 60th ranked point guard in his graduating class, and laughably, the 300th overall player. Of his seven college offers, the only one to show real interest was Davidson College and their coach Bob McKillop. Before Curry had even played a game for the Wildcats, McKillop proclaimed: “wait 'til you see Steph Curry. He is something special."
Curry had a great college career and eventually lit the NCCA on fire in his final season, averaging 28.6 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.5 steals. But despite it all, Steph still fell to 7th overall in the draft, even getting passed by the point guard needy Timberwolves twice!
Steph had a solid start to his NBA career, but he didn’t make his big leap until year four. After being dangerously close to being traded for Andrew Bogut (a real thing that almost happened), Curry got healthy, and everything changed.
Curry kicked off year four by becoming a first-time All-Star. In year five, he won his first MVP and first NBA championship. The next season he again won the MVP award and also led the Warriors to the first ever 73 win season. Steph had officially achieved superstar status, and there was no going back. Not bad for the former 300th best player in the nation.
LAS VEGAS ACES
Las Vegas Aces triumph during WNBA Commissioner's Cup!
The Las Vegas Aces defeated the first-place Chicago Sky in the second annual WNBA Commissioner's Cup championship game 93-83.
Kelsey Plum led all scorers with 24 points, but Chelsea Gray was named the game’s MVP after putting up 19 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Plum was the only Vegas starter not to be named an All-Star, so this award surely meant a little something extra to her while also reminding the rest of the league just how deep the Aces are.
With three weeks left in the regular season, the Sky and Aces are the first and only teams to clinch playoff spots so far and could be poised to meet again in the WNBA Finals.
